It was so strange. It was so emotional seeing Noma’s performance in a way that I had not anticipated at all. She walked in the room and I just spontaneously burst into tears. I had played that character so intensely up until that point, that to know Hermione was going to be okay — I know it sounds crazy — but to know everything turned out all right and everything in the world was okay, that there was someone else carrying her on and carrying her forward … it was just such a relief.
Beauty is not long hair, skinny legs, tanned skin or perfect teeth. Beauty is what we feel in the inside which also shows outside us. Beauty is the marks the life leaves on us, all the kicks and the caresses the memories leave us. Beauty is letting yourself live.
We think we live in a post-feminist society, and we do not. So we’re told we don’t need feminism anymore, that we have the vote and we’re all good. And I think, actually, that’s incredibly disconcerting because then when young women move into the world and they realize, ‘Oh, why am I not being paid the same? Why am I being treated differently?’ And they start to blame themselves, because they don’t understand they’re part of a historic pattern. They’re part of a much larger system which is working a little bit against them.
